All one-year-olds get free books!
In Strand Municipality, our aim is to have all parents reading for their children. Therefore, we have started the project “Read for me!”, where all our one-year-olds will receive three free books! Children receive the first book during their 10-month check-up, they receive the second book during a parents’ meeting in kindergarten or at the public health centre, and the third can be collected at the library. If you haven’t received any books for your child, please contact the library.
Why?
Good language skills are important for our children to be academically and socially successful in kindergarten and at school. Enjoyable moments that include reading aloud are the very best ways to develop vocabulary. In addition, it helps children’s brains to develop and creates the close, safe, good, and loving bond between us parents and our children. The golden age of learning language is from 1 and a half to 3 years old, and the work we do at home is really important!
Small children should be bathed in water and words.
Both of them are equally important. Our children need to hear a word hundreds of times before they can understand and pronounce it themselves. Therefore, we must never let the chance go by to talk about the dog we see, the porridge we eat, the colour of the trousers we put on and the smell of freshly baked buns. Talk, talk, talk and talk. And sing! And read! Books allow us to meet others and more words than those we use in everyday speech. Therefore, books are very effective.

During a session of reading aloud, children who are accustomed to having things read for them, have higher and different types of activity in the parts of the brain that govern linguistic development, compared to children who don’t have things read for them at home. (READ MORE)

Children who have many children’s books at home and who have had things read for them before the age of two, have a vocabulary that is almost twice as large when they start school compared to those with few children’s books at home, and who haven’t had anyone read for them before they have turned four years old. The most important resource for promoting a child’s reading is mum and dad. It is the guardian’s own reading, and their reading for and with the child, that has the greatest impact on the child’s desire to read and reading habits. Research solidly supports reading aloud for and with children at an early age. It is the most important single component regarding language development, increasing vocabulary, strengthening the ability to formulate words, reading comprehension and the desire to read in children. A seventeen-year-old who had someone read for them at home knows around 50,000 words. Some seventeen-year-olds only know 15,000 words. This isn’t enough to be able to understand the contents of a newspaper. (WATCH THE VIDEO)

Books
Revungen våkner, spiser frokost og går på lekeplassen. Boken er uten tekst. De voksne kan snakke med barnet om bildene og ta utgangspunkt i de forskjellige situasjonene. Alle barna i målgruppen får denne boka på helsestasjonen.
Min verden er en enkel billedbok med tegninger av hverdagslige gjenstander. Oppslagene følger døgnet rundt fra frokoststund til godnatt-tid. Barna får denne på helsestasjonen, fra høsten 2020 vil barna få den ved oppstart I barnehagen.
Mopp og Mikko elskar mat, dyr, ting og kjøretøy. Guten Mikko er den som finner ut kva dei skal samle på eller leite etter, mens jenta Mopp bestemmer kva slag kjøretøy dei skal samle tinga i. Boka har eit klart og tydeleg farge- og formspråk om ting som opptar dei yngste i kvardagslivet. Foreldra kan koma til biblioteket og velgja 3 bøker til barnet sitt, dette er ei av bøkene.
Harepus og Lillemus leter etter et sted å bo. De titter inn i huler, hull og hi, men alt er opptatt. De må finne seg et sted før det blir mørkt. Se gjennom hullene i sidene på alle stedene de to vennene titter inn. Foreldrene kan komme til biblioteket og velge 3 bøker til barnet sitt, dette er en bøkene.
Den lille larven Aldrimett spiser seg gjennom ukedager, epler, plommer, jordbær og faktisk også sidene i boka, inntil den en vakker dag er blitt helt mett, og blir forvandlet til en vidunderlig vakker sommerfugl. Foreldrene kan komme til biblioteket og velge 3 bøker til barnet sitt, dette er en bøkene.
Veslefanten, Makkus og Kanina skal leggje seg. Men først må dei kle av seg, vaske snuten, pusse tennene og sitte på potta. Etterpå er det graut og bok. Dette er ei peikebok om typiske ting ein gjer før ein skal sove. Foreldra kan koma til biblioteket og velgja 3 bøker til barnet sitt, dette er ei av bøkene.
